Churchill: An Illustrated History (HB) by Brenda Ralph-Lewis
About The Book
Winston Churchill - prime minister of England, passionate orator, Nobel prize-winning author, has taken his place in history as one of the world's leading statesmen.
Born to privilege and high social standing, Winston Churchill withstood a childhood rich with neglect and disappointment.
In 'Churchill: An Illustrated History' you'll learn how his father's constant disapproval and reputation as a leading politician in Parliament motivated him to join Sandhurst Military Academy. After his training, he served as a soldier in Cuba, India, the Sudan, and then worked as a news correspondent in South Africa during the Boer War, making a fantastic escape as a prisoner.
In 1900 he entered Parliament . By 1908, the year he married Clementine Hozier, he took his place in the Cabinet for the first time. He was hounded from office in 1915 over the failure of the Dardanelles campaign, and he earned the hatred of many working-class people during the General Strike of 1926.
In 1939 a newspaper campaign helped to bring Churchill back to the political forefront and he became Britain's Prime Minister in 1940.
After the war he worked tirelessly to halt the spread of Communism in Europe and to forge strong relations between Britain, the United States, and the Commonwealth.
By the end of his life in 1965, he was revered as one of the most influential men of the 20th century.
